Port Operations Preparing For Cleaner Future

Port Operations Preparing For Cleaner Future

Handling, Manufacturer
Faced with increasing regulation, many port operators are now looking to achieve zero emissions with their handling equipment. With commonly used equipment, such as Reach Stackers, Empty and Laden Container Handlers, and heavy-duty forklift trucks, traditionally powered by IC (internal combustion) engines, how can ports, and truck manufacturers, prepare for a lower emissions future? From the UK, where the government is investing in technologies to transform the shipping industry into a zero emissions sector, to the state of California, USA, which proposes that all cargo-handling equipment should be zero emission by 2030, ports around the world are demanding lift trucks that can support their environmental goals, while meeting their particular application requirements. One way that ma...

Loler and Puwer turn 20

Loler and Puwer turn 20

Industry
This month marks the 20th anniversary of LOLER and PUWER. CFTS Chairman Geoff Martin, pictured, reflects on their introduction, what each entails and their ongoing impact on the fork lift truck employers. December 1998 is probably most-widely remembered for its Christmas gales. However, for those in the fork lift industry, it was a time of great change. That month saw both the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations come into force. Created to implement the EU’s changes to the Use of Work Equipment Directive (AUWED), the legislation aims to make working life safer for everyone using and coming into contact with equipment. This lack of clarity, however, has led to widespread confusion among lift truck empl...

Manitou and Deutz have joined forces and introduced two prototype telehandlers

Industry, Innovation, Manufacturer
A new team player for electric construction machinery has emerged onto the market with a prototype telehandler. Manitou and Deutz have joined forces and introduced two prototype telehandlers: one as a hybrid, and another a full electric system machine, to meet increasing demand for such vehicles. This is the first time Deutz has incorporated prototype electric drives into Manitou equipment, and as a result the Manitou MT 1135 has been launched as a prototype. Deutz says it has provided a modular product portfolio for electric drives, which enables customers to choose the combination of combustion engine, electric motor, battery and power electronics that is best suited to their needs. And should the customer require it, a pure electric drive system is also available on request. Ma...

The new NO-N2 range of low-level order pickers from Cat® Lift Trucks.

Manufacturer
Optimum use of energy has been the designers' focus in developing the new NO-N2 range of low-level order pickers from Cat® Lift Trucks. As well as delivering the best energy efficiency in the market, they energise drivers by reducing fatigue and boosting every aspect of order picking performance. Energy consumption is 14% lower than that of their nearest rival in the first- and second-level picking class, and they are significantly more efficient across all operating speeds. Dynamic technology Operators are empowered by advanced steering functionality, building on the Responsive Drive System (RDS) technology pioneered in recent Cat electric counterbalance trucks. A key outcome is the order pickers' unique intelligent curve control, which reacts rapidly to the operator's steeri...
Are you ready for EU Stage V?

Are you ready for EU Stage V?

Industry, Trending
Emission standards for diesel forklift trucks are about to get a lot stricter and, for the first time, LPG trucks are affected too. What are the implications for buyers planning their future strategic fleet purchases? Paul Watson, UK Commercial Director at Doosan Industrial Vehicles UK explains what can be done. As of 1st January 2019 new diesel and LPG powered forklift trucks sold in the European Union will start to have to comply with the world’s toughest emission standards for non-road vehicles, Euro-Stage V. Although the UK is set to exit the EU shortly after its introduction, the standards will almost certainly be adopted here too. So what will this mean for those planning their forklift truck fleets? Should buyers be reconsidering their fuel or power options? Possibly, but ther...
