Following the CEA’s (Construction Equipment Association) AGM at Plantworx Construction Exhibition, Chief Executive, Rob Oliver, announced a new member of the Management Council – Mark Ormond, Manitou UK’s Managing Director. Forklift business Combilift was started in Monaghan 18 years ago by engineers Martin McVicar (44) and Robert Moffett (62). Before the company went private in 2005, it had accumulated profits of almost €23m on a turnover of €53m. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength with revenues now at €1bn. It is difficult to put a value on the business, which recently opened a new facility built at a cost of €50m. Combilift currently exports 98pc of its products to 85 countries. The current workforce stands at 550 with over 200 new jobs being created. Financial experts have conservatively valued the business at €60m, although it is likely to be worth substantially more.

Doosan sales director Paul Watson has moved to the company’s Birmingham-based dealer Seoul as general manager. Seoul was set up last year as a subsidiary of Duo Group Holdings to sell, hire and service Doosan construction machinery. Paul Watson previously ran corporate accounts and the UK dealer network at Doosan. As general manager of Seoul he will be targeting corporate customers in the quarrying, aggregates, waste and recycling industries.

Three apprentices have been awarded top of their year at Linde Material Handling’s annual Apprenticeship Awards. Jack Young, Wesley Edmunds, and David Flint were each of the winners of their respective year groups, with Jack Young being named as the overall apprentice of the year. This year the event was held at Brooklands Museum on 14th November and celebrated the young people in Linde’s apprenticeship training programme. Linde currently has 64 apprentices across the four-year programme having taken on 139 apprentices to date. The course allows young people to gain valuable industry experience which enables them to develop their professional and personal skills while also gaining a formal qualification. Linde is to increase its involvement in the material handling industry as its UK chief joins the board of the British Industrial Truck Association (BITA). The appointment of Massimiliano Sammartano, managing director UK at the firm, comes at the same time as two long-serving members of the trade body are to step down. Sammartano said, “I am looking forward to my new appointment on the BITA board.
