Companies from across the construction supply chain are well represented among the 201 winners of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2019. Niftylift, a UK manufacturer of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), has achieved the distinction of being the only company to win in two categories for a second time. In 2019, just as in 2013, Niftylift won a Queen’s Award in both the International Trade and the Innovation categories. Manitou has launched its 100% electric range. The Oxygen line includes a new aerial platform and a number of telehandler models. The ATJ 200 e Oxygen is the group’s first electric all terrain aerial platform. With a working height of up to 20m for a maximum capacity of 230kg, the model provides the same performance as a diesel-powered version. Equipped with a 48 V battery, it can achieve up to one working day on full charge in adverse weather conditions. The low-voltage battery allows technicians to work on it without special certification. With a weight of 7,200kg and a length of 6m, it is also easily transportable. The father and son team of Malcolm and Ben Bowers have sold their Lifterz access platform hire business to Speedy for £9.6m cash. Speedy has also paid off Lifterz’s £11.9m debt as part of the transaction, making it a £21.5m deal. Lifterz Holdings is based in Wakefield, with additional sites in Haydock, Daventry and Bathgate. It has a fleet of approximately 1,300 access platforms, £15m annual revenues and 90 employees. Unaudited revenue for the 12 months ended 31st January 2019 was £15.2m with normalised EBITDA of £3.3m. Gross assets were £17.2m. Malcolm Bowers, who turned 70 last month, previously founded Aerials for Industry Ltd (AFI) in 1998 before selling out in 2005 and starting Lifterz with his son in 2007. The Competition & Markets Authority has given unconditional clearance for Nationwide Platforms, a UK subsidiary of France’s Loxam Group, to acquire UK Platforms Ltd from hire company HSS. The £60.5m deal can now proceed, enabling HSS to reduce debt and concentrate on its core business of tool hire. HSS said that it expects the transaction to complete in early 2019. The sale means that UK Platforms returns to French ownership. HSS bought the powered access rental business in 2013 from French manufacturer Haulotte. It has a fleet of around 3,000 platforms and operates from 12 branches. Star Platforms is investing £2m in 400 new pieces of equipment to support the opening of its fifth depot. The company provides a range of powered access equipment including scissor lifts, cherry pickers and low-level platforms to help people work safely at height. Its branches in Luton, Leicestershire, Berkshire and Kent have been joined by a fifth depot in Thetford in Norfolk, covering the Anglian region. Increased demand has also led to the company investing £2 million in 400 new pieces of equipment, which will be shared across all five sites.
