CFTS supports National Forklift Safety Day

General, Handling
Tuesday 8th June 2021 is National Forklift Safety Day, and the UK materials handling industry is once again being encouraged to get involved, share guidance and take action to make sites safer. Now in the UK for its third year, National Forklift Safety Day will be hosted by the UK Material Handling Association (UKMHA), which comprises the industry’s leading trade associations: BITA and the FLTA. This year, National Forklift Safety Day will highlight the role of Thorough Examinations, and why regular inspections are key to ensuring businesses are using safe equipment. As the industry’s accrediting body for Thorough Examinations, CFTS has been working closely with UKMHA to develop insightful resources that will be shared as part of the event. CFTS Chairman Geoff Martin explai...
New UK articulated forklift promises market shake-up

New UK articulated forklift promises market shake-up

General, Logistics
The UK articulated forklift market faces it biggest potential upset in years as a new entrant makes its debut with truck prices that could undercut its three rivals by up to 30%. The company is MiMA, founded in China 27 years ago and offering a broad range of electric handling trucks, tow tractors and specials, like die-handling trucks of up to 30t lift capacity. This last expertise is what particularly attracted Wilmat Ltd, newly appointed UK agent for MiMA, who produce similar specials but only up to 15 t capacity. They will be handling the MiMA articulated product range roll out across the UK and Ireland in the second half of this year. MiMA developed its articulated forklift range last year with rated capacities between 1500 kg and 3,000 kg but only the 2,000 kg model will be av...

Jungheinrich presents new ERD 220i electric pallet truck

New Trucks
Jungheinrich has unveiled its new electric pallet truck ERD 220i at a recent virtual event. The forklift truck is designed for flexible use in the handling warehouse and to load and unload trucks. The new ERD 220i  has L2 dimension of just 1,065 mm and is therefore the most compact truck in its class. Compared to its predecessor, the 220i is more than 300mm shorter thanks to its new lithium-ion battery concept, which results in a space reduction of approximately 25 per cent. The compact dimensions make the electric pallet truck particularly versatile and agile to drive. Its turning radius has been reduced to just 1,985 millimetres. This creates new free space in existing warehouses and enables precise manoeuvring even in confined spaces. It also allows for completely new concepts...

Rebrand for Nationwide Hire

Plant and tool hire broker Nationwide Hire has changed its name to WowNow Hire. The private equity owned firm needed a new name to distinguish it in from other ‘Nationwides’ out there, including Nationwide Platforms. This Nationwide, now called WowNow, is a £16m business founded by Howard Piper in Hampshire in 1995. It has no inventory, shops or depots but boasts access to five million products from 9,000 locations by acting as an intermediary. In October 2019 Wol Kolade’s private equity vehicle, Livingbridge, invested £15m in the business to take control. Chief executive Jonathan Holley said: “Changing our name makes perfect sense. We still cover the entire United Kingdom and the new name amplifies what we are all about, our WowNow DNA.” He said that the ‘Wow’ reflected...
Confused about “ATEX” compliant lithium-ion forklift batteries?

Confused about “ATEX” compliant lithium-ion forklift batteries?

Batteries
Using a lithium-ion battery to power a lift truck has many advantages in the right application, but (at the time of writing in June 2021) the requirements to assure lithium-ion batteries are safe for use in potentially explosive atmospheres is not clear. Some manufacturers have placed trucks with lithium-ion batteries into Ex applications but others, including Pyroban do not believe the technology is appropriate at this time. Steve Noakes, Managing Director of Pyroban and convenor of the EN1755 standards committee, explains the problem. We receive a growing number of enquiries for Ex-certified lithium-ion battery options, and for good reason. Lithium-ion batteries allow opportunity charging, require less maintenance, and offer longer operation between charges, so have proven to be po...
