The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) says that moving away from plastic cards for trained operators to a smart phone application is a ‘game-changer’ for site safety. IPAF’s ePAL is set to be launched in April 2021 – a digital IPAF PAL Card, operator log book and operator safety guides. It will also allow operators to receive the latest IPAF safety information and best practice guidance, and will ultimately allow construction managers to verify an operative’s qualifications, as well as for the operator to log and share their equipment time. There has been little change in the Top 10 forklift manufacturers list for 2019/20. A report by German magazine DHF shows Toyota still at the top of the ranking, with 26.82% of the global market. KION remains in second place, with 14.59%, followed by Jungheinrich with 9.28%. The minor changes in the ranking include Manitou and Kalmar, seventh and eighth, respectively, which switched positions from last year. Similarly, Clark and Doosan (11th and 12th) have traded places in the latest listing. According to analysis by report author Jurgen Warmbold, incoming orders for the 2019 year dropped from 1,537,979 (2018) to 1,506,876 units - the first drop after six years of growth. Ardent Hire Solutions has placed a £26m order with dealer Watling JCB for 525 new Loadall telescopic handlers. Ardent’s order spans the compact 525-60 to the 540-200 models, which have reaches of between six and 20 metres. It has also ordered 25 JCB 3CX backhoe loaders. It follows a deal in 2019 from Ardent for £75m-worth of JCB machines. The new JCB machines all come with JCB LiveLink telematics technology, providing real-time feeds to support Ardent’s ‘Site Manager’ digital platform. Ardent chief financial officer Julian O’Neill said: “Our telehandler fleet is already the largest anywhere in the UK and this substantial investment strengthens our position in the telescopic handler hire sector.”

Snorkel is now offering all of its rough terrain telehandlers in an open cab version as an alternative to its standard enclosed cab. The Snorkel telehandler models SR626, SR1442, SR1745 and SR1065 come with a choice of an open cab, or a fully enclosed cab with heat and air conditioning. On the full electric, lithium-ion battery powered SR626E, both can types are available but there is no air conditioning in the enclosed cab. The open cab version features the same design and layout as the enclosed version and has a mesh grid to protect the operator.
