In 2019, explosion protection company Pyroban will celebrate 50 years of helping to keep people safe in potentially explosive atmospheres. At LogiMAT, from 19th – 21st February 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany, Pyroban will be inviting manufacturers and users of lift trucks, warehouse equipment, scrubber driers, cranes and other industrial vehicles used in ‘ATEX’ zones to join the celebration. All-clear for Loxam’s UK Platforms takeover

The Competition & Markets Authority has given unconditional clearance for Nationwide Platforms, a UK subsidiary of France’s Loxam Group, to acquire UK Platforms Ltd from hire company HSS. The £60.5m deal can now proceed, enabling HSS to reduce debt and concentrate on its core business of tool hire. HSS said that it expects the transaction to complete in early 2019. The sale means that UK Platforms returns to French ownership. HSS bought the powered access rental business in 2013 from French manufacturer Haulotte. It has a fleet of around 3,000 platforms and operates from 12 branches. Nationwide Platforms is the UK’s largest mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) hire company with more than 12,000 machines in its fleet. It was taken over by French rental giant Loxam last year. ...

Three apprentices have been awarded top of their year at Linde Material Handling’s annual Apprenticeship Awards. Jack Young, Wesley Edmunds, and David Flint were each of the winners of their respective year groups, with Jack Young being named as the overall apprentice of the year. This year the event was held at Brooklands Museum on 14th November and celebrated the young people in Linde’s apprenticeship training programme. Linde currently has 64 apprentices across the four-year programme having taken on 139 apprentices to date. The course allows young people to gain valuable industry experience which enables them to develop their professional and personal skills while also gaining a formal qualification. Around 7,200 employees at JCB’s 11 plants across Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Wrexham will receive an extra £1,000 in their pay packets. The last time a Christmas bonus of that size was awarded was in 2007. JCB machine production reached a 73-year high in 2018 and an additional 1,500 people have been recruited. This includes the awarding of permanent JCB contracts to around 550 agency employees. Martin McVicar, chief executive of Monaghan-based forklift maker Combilift, which sells 25 per cent of the vehicles it assembles to the UK, recalls that the company hedged against this by buying as many components as it could from British suppliers, thus using cheaper sterling to cut costs, offsetting the impact of the more expensive euro on the price of the finished trucks.
