Around 7,200 employees at JCB’s 11 plants across Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Wrexham will receive an extra £1,000 in their pay packets. The last time a Christmas bonus of that size was awarded was in 2007. JCB machine production reached a 73-year high in 2018 and an additional 1,500 people have been recruited. This includes the awarding of permanent JCB contracts to around 550 agency employees. JCB is sending a pair of Loadall telescopic handlers to the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi following the earthquake and tsunami which has killed more than 1,400 people. The 531-70 and 540-170 machines, complete with grab attachments, buckets and forks, will be put to work initially removing heavy debris and later helping the reconstruction effort. The company said that the value of the donation was $250,000 (£190,000). JCB chairman Lord Bamford said today: “The scale of this natural disaster has shocked people all over the world and JCB always tries to help wherever these catastrophes occur. Toyota Materials Handling UK has signed a new five-year lease at Old Dalby Business Park in Leicestershire. The company, the global leader in materials handling manufacture, occupies 233,000 sq ft in three buildings at the site on Old Dalby Lane, Melton Mowbray, where it carries out refurbishment of forklift trucks. It has been based at the business park since 2002. Originally occupying 136,500 sq ft, Toyota Materials Handling UK has continued to expand to accommodate its growing business. The Fork Lift Truck Association has launched its ‘Safetember’ campaign, which will run next month as part of National Fork Lift Safety Month. Turnover has topped £200m and profits have grown at materials handling equipment supplier Briggs Equipment. The company, which is the exclusive UK distributor of Hyster and Yale forklift trucks, generated revealed of £204m in the year to 31 December 2017, new accounts have revealed, up from £179.1m 12 months prior. Briggs said the hike was "significantly underpinned" by major contract wins in the ports and terminals market, as well as an overall increase in market share.
